To my shame, I hadn't come across instrumentalist and inventor Ellen Fullman until last week. Fullman is renowned for her invention and playing of the Long String Instrument, which consists of dozens of strings stretched across a room from which she coaxes sounds with rosin-coated fingers. Among others, she's collaborated with the Kronos Quartet, Pauline Oliveros and Francis-Marie Uitti. There doesn't appear to be a whole lot of Fullman on record, but there is a new album, Through Glass Panes, available on the very fine Important Records.
Here's a couple of videos capturing a performance in California a month back; the first is a gorgeous and hypnotic piece with Jason Hoopes on bass and Gino Robair on drums; for the the second - a rather more aggressive, but still beatiful improvisation - they're joined by the great Fred Frith on guitar (subject of a great enthusiasm here a few months ago) and Travis Weller on zither.
