I mentioned in my last post that alongside performing with the Brighton Guitar Quartet as guests of the Sussex Musicians' Club on Saturday 15.10.22, I turned in a performance of Reginald Smith Brindle's "El Polifemo de Oro". Well, here's a recording of that performance, warts 'n' all. And there are plenty of warts to be sure. It's always hard listening back to these things - all I can hear is the mistakes - the wrong notes, the shaky right hand, the odd missed passage or mistaken articulation. It's a pretty abstract piece, so my guess is that few audience members noticed - but I did!
That said, if I step back a bit, I think I can say that if nothing else, it's a real performance, played with conviction and with the necessary tonal and dynamic contrasts to communicate the weird drama of the piece.
Thanks to the SMC's Hugh O'Neal for the recording.
